Choral at St Michael’s with the Cwmbach Male Choir
Sat July 14 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pmStandard Ticket - £14
Cwmbach Male Choir is one of the best-known names in the male choir world, and has done much to help develop the magical reputation that has become a hallmark of our valleys’ culture. Over the years, the choir has been very successful in the competitive field, winning numerous prizes at competitions and Eisteddfodau both in their native Wales and across the globe. They have represented their country abroad on many occasions in competitions and conducted extensive tours in countries such as the U.S.A., Canada, South Africa and across mainland Europe, in recent years returning from a second tour to Southern Spain and earlier this year, enjoying its second visit to Croatia.
Over the years, the Cwmbach Male Choir has performed in many prestigious venues including the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, the Barbican, St David’s Hall and numerous Cathedrals worldwide. The Choir has shared the stage with many world famous artists including Paul Robeson, Sir Geraint Evans, Sir Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Sir Cliff Richard, Daniel O’Donnell, Charlotte Church and Catherine Jenkins to name just a few.
Formed in 1921, the choir is based in Aberdare in the South Wales valleys, where the people’s love of music making is only matched by their love of rugby. It is therefore fitting that some of the choir’s most impressive credits involve their national game. The Cwmbach Male Choir was the first choir to be invited by the Welsh Rugby Union to perform at the world famous Cardiff Arms Park to entertain the crowd and lead the singing prior to a Five Nations Rugby International. They have also performed at The Millennium Stadium, most notably ahead of the Wales versus Ireland Six Nations clash in 2005, which saw Wales complete the ‘Grand Slam’.
Tonight’s conductor is Ben Pinnow – an accompanist singer, composer and musical educator with over ten years musical experience.
The soloist is Catrin Wyn Southall – from aged 8, she has developed her singing education in UK and USA before an extensive career in Welsh language music television, backing vocalist to many stars and in fronting her own band.
The accompanist is Jayne Thomas – a music graduate of Goldsmiths College, she teaches piano, keyboard, music theory and group singing, privately, at schools and adult education centres.
The organist is Sheridan George – well known in British organ circles, Sheridan has accompanied the Choir at the organ in places far and near.
The choir is delighted to be returning once again to perform in the Festival, and to enjoy the wonderful surroundings of St. Michael’s Church…….and, of course, afterwards in the Globe Inn!
Interval wine and some soft drinks will be available from a pay bar.
