Art Exhibition Plus

The exhibition takes place between Saturday 23rd and Saturday 30th of May in Somerton’s Parish Rooms.  Once again we welcome artists working in any media, photographers, sculptors and embroiderers to exhibit in the annual SMAF amateur Art & Photography Exhibition.

Tickets for workshops during the week of the Art & Photography Exhibition will not be available until later in the year.

Saturday 23rd May 10.30 – 12.30 in the Pinney Room: Beginners’ Digital Art Workshop Using Adobe Illustrator with Kirsten Rae

This workshop is sponsored by Bruton School for Girls.

Cost: £8.00 per person (Maximum of 10)

Ever wanted to learn how to draw using Adobe Illustrator to create eye catching digital art? If so then this workshop is for you. It will include a number of small tutorials to get you on your way including: Selecting & Transforming; The Pen Tool; Working with Colour/ Gradients; Fills & Strokes; Creating Shape; Appearance Panel; Tracing images & Live Paint; Working with Images, Type and Brushes plus Printing Saving & Exporting.

Please bring your IPAD pros/Apple Pencils, laptops & have Adobe Illustrator installed.

Saturday 23rd May Drop-in Session from 2.00 – 4.00 pm in the Pinney Room: Children’s Cartoon Drawing With Sam

Cost: £2.00 per child and includes refreshments

“Give your children a cool new skill that’s easy to learn! Your children will be taught, step-by-step, how to draw a silly cartoon face by Sam, an ex-Teacher.  The benefits of art, drawing and cartooning have proven to be remarkable. The children will receive a certificate once they have drawn a silly face and we will set up a gallery to display their creations (if they want to)!”

Tuesday 26th May 10.30- 12.30 in the Pinney Room: Children’s Cross Stitching with Sue

Cost: £2.00 per child and includes refreshments (Maximum of 10)

Come along and learn how to cross stitch with Sue. Each child will be given all the materials, threads and needles required to learn how to make a coaster which they can take away on the day. If you let us know what initial they want on the coaster in advance then we can have the design ready.

Tuesday 26th May 7.00 – 9.00 pm in the Pinney Room: Flower Arranging with Jane

Cost: £20.00 per person (Maximum of 10 people

An evening of fun with flowers. Ideas for creating table centres for all occasions and tips for getting the best out of your flowers. Flowers and foliage included but please bring your own scissors.

Wednesday 27th May 2.00 – 4.00 pm in the Old Town Hall: Afternoon of Crocheting with Sue

Cost: £5.00 per person (Maximum of 12)

Crocheted before? Forgotten how? Want to improve your crochet skills Come along to this workshop and revive your crochet mojo.  Bring a project, pattern or something you are stuck with, or just bring yourself and we will work a Granny Square and learn some pattern interpretation.

Wednesday 27th May 7.00 – 9.00 pm in the Pinney Room: Growing an Outfit by Jan

Cost: £5.00 per person (Maximum of 15)

Come along to this workshop run by Jan of “Bespoke of Somerton”. Bespoke is a team of very talented seamstresses who have a vast range of fabrics for any occasion and are internationally famed for their waistcoats. Jan will give a short talk about how they work at “Bespoke”, a brief history of fashion and will then “grow an outfit” on a mannequin with a previously cut out pattern. Whilst pinning the outfit together, Jan will give tips on how to “build” this outfit.

Thursday 28th May 10.30 – 12.30 in the Pinney Room: Beginners Drawing Workshop with Mandy McAllen

Cost: £8.00 per person (Maximum of 10)

Even if you are a complete beginner this workshop is for you to enjoy being creative literally from scratch! As summer is just beginning Mandy will encourage you to make the most of the loveliest time of the year and motivate you to get outdoors with a pencil and a sketchbook. You will explore making marks on paper with simple materials, you can bring your own selection of pencils pens and biros, and cartridge paper. Provided will be a variety of alternative surfaces to experiment on,interesting papers found in the recycling,maybe even the back of an envelope? In addition to this you will be making one polished piece on card (provided) using a drawing technique called sgraffito. The inspiration will be gardens and landscapes, so if you have a photo you would like to work from please bring it, or choose from Mandy’s selection.

Thursday 28th May 7.00 – 9.00 pm in the Pinney Room: An Evening of Resin Jewellery Making with Eve

Cost: £8.00 per person (Maximum of 6)

Come and learn the art of making resin crafts and jewellery.  During this workshop you will be able to produce your very own resin jewellery using molds & metal bezels.  Eve will explain how she uses UV resin which will enable you to be able to take your creation home at the end of the workshop.

Friday 29th May 10.30 -12.30 in the Pinney Room: Children’s Bracelet Making with Sue

Cost: £2.00 per child, includes one bracelet and refreshments (additional bracelets will be charged at £1.00 per bracelet) (Maximum of 12)

This workshop is aimed at children who can drop into the workshop and learn how to make a funky bracelet with light reflecting beads!  It will be fun, relaxed as they test out their threading skills and see how steady their hands are.

Friday 29th May 2.00 – 4.00 in the Pinney Room: The Art of Gift Box Making with Sue

Cost: £5.00 per person (Maximum of 20)

Learn how to make your own gift boxes and amaze your friends, in this unique workshop, all materials supplied.

Friday 29th May 7-9pm Craft at the Chocolate House Somerton: Truffle Making with Nettie

Cost: £20 per person (Maximum of 10)

Calling all chocolate lovers, Nettie, the local chocolatier will teach you how to taste chocolate then talk briefly about the craft chocolate movement and how chocolate is made before guiding you through the truffle making process. She will teach you to mix, cream, pipe, dip and decorate your own truffles before sending you home with a bag of your very own home-made truffles to share (or not) with friends and family.

Saturday 30th May 10.00 – 12.00 LEGO Challenge in the Library

Free event

Pop in and challenge your friends, parents or grandparents to build something out of Lego. This session will be relaxed and fun, no skills needed just a good imagination.
